    Quality of Life in a Mixed Ethnic Population after Myocardial Infarction

    Background: Although South Asian people are a significant ethnic group at increased risk of coronary heart disease and high mortality rates and experience greater delays with respect to diagnosis, referral and treatment, comparatively little is known about their quality of life during recovery from a myocardial infarction.Objectives: We sought to determine and compare the impact of ethnicity on quality of life after myocardial infarction (MI) in a mixed ethnic population (South Asian and white people) in the UK.Methods: A 2x2 mixed-group design with repeated measures on the second factor. The independent variables were ethnic group (white/South Asian) and time since MI (2 weeks/3 months). The dependent variables were the subscale scores on the Short-Form 36-item health survey (SF-36) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).Results: At 2 weeks, significant differences were observed between groups on 5 of the 8 SF-36 subscale domain scores, with the white group reporting higher quality of life. Significant improvement in reported quality of life occurred in both groups over time on all domains of the SF-36, except bodily pain. There was a significantly greater improvement in favour of the white group for the role-physical domain. There was no significant difference between groups in terms of anxiety or depression at 2 weeks. Both groups showed a significant reduction in anxiety and depression by 3 months, but the degree of reduction was not significantly different between them. At 3 months, there was no significant difference between groups in terms of anxiety scores, but the South Asian group scored significantly higher on the depression scale.Conclusions: South Asian people have significantly poorer quality of life than white people after MI. While both groups showed improvement over time, South Asian people reported significantly less improvement in physical role function and were more depressed at 3 months. Identifying the factors accounting for such differences is important to develop models of care for delivering the most effective and culturally-sensitive interventions to this group

    Mean Field Theory of Sandpile Avalanches: from the Intermittent to the Continuous Flow Regime

    We model the dynamics of avalanches in granular assemblies in partly filled rotating cylinders using a mean-field approach. We show that, upon varying the cylinder angular velocity ω\omega, the system undergoes a hysteresis cycle between an intermittent and a continuous flow regimes. In the intermittent flow regime, and approaching the transition, the avalanche duration exhibits critical slowing down with a temporal power-law divergence. Upon adding a white noise term, and close to the transition, the distribution of avalanche durations is also a power-law. The hysteresis, as well as the statistics of avalanche durations, are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments in partly filled rotating cylinders.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX 3.0, postscript figures 1, 3 and 4 appended

More recently the rapid advances of technology underpinning new media have facilitated both the collaboration of artists in virtual spaces and the use of new media to create, view, and interact with artistic works. Technology and applications are changing the way ideas are formed and the way research is developed and advanced. In addition, the ubiquity of new media has facilitated its use to support and develop a number of application domains.     Solar Stereoscopy with STEREO/EUVI A and B spacecraft from small (6 deg) to large (170 deg) spacecraft separation angles

    We performed for the first time stereoscopic triangulation of coronal loops in active regions over the entire range of spacecraft separation angles (αsep6,43,89,127\alpha_{sep}\approx 6^\circ, 43^\circ, 89^\circ, 127^\circ, and 170170^\circ). The accuracy of stereoscopic correlation depends mostly on the viewing angle with respect to the solar surface for each spacecraft, which affects the stereoscopic correspondence identification of loops in image pairs. From a simple theoretical model we predict an optimum range of αsep22125\alpha_{sep} \approx 22^\circ-125^\circ, which is also experimentally confirmed. The best accuracy is generally obtained when an active region passes the central meridian (viewed from Earth), which yields a symmetric view for both STEREO spacecraft and causes minimum horizontal foreshortening. For the extended angular range of αsep6127\alpha_{sep}\approx 6^\circ-127^{\circ} we find a mean 3D misalignment angle of μPF2139\mu_{PF} \approx 21^\circ-39^\circ of stereoscopically triangulated loops with magnetic potential field models, and μFFF1521\mu_{FFF} \approx 15^\circ-21^\circ for a force-free field model, which is partly caused by stereoscopic uncertainties μSE9\mu_{SE} \approx 9^\circ. We predict optimum conditions for solar stereoscopy during the time intervals of 2012--2014, 2016--2017, and 2021--2023.Comment: Solar Physics, (in press), 22 pages, 9 figure

    Changes to DPPC domain structure in the presence of carbon nanoparticles

    DPPC (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine) is a disaturated lipid capable of forming closely packed monolayers at the air–liquid interface of the lung and allows the surface tension within the alveoli to reduce to almost zero and thus prevent alveolar collapse. Carbon nanoparticles are formed in natural and man-made combustion events, including diesel engines, and are capable of reaching the alveolar epithelium during breathing. In this work, we have used Brewster angle microscopy and neutron reflectivity to study the effect of differing concentrations of carbon nanoparticles on the structure of DPPC monolayer as the monolayer is subject to compression and expansion. The results show that the inclusion of carbon nanoparticles within a DPPC monolayer affects the formation and structure of the lipid domains. The domains lose their circular structure and show a crenated structure as well as a reduction in overall size of the domains. This change in structure is also evident following expansion of the lipid monolayer, suggesting that some carbon nanoparticles may remain associated with the monolayer. This observation could have an important implication regarding the removal of nanosized airborne pollutants from the human lung

    Development of an acceptable and feasible self-management group for children, young people and families living with Type 1 diabetes.

    AIMS: This study developed an acceptable and feasible self-management intervention that addresses the self-identified needs of children and young people with Type 1 diabetes and their parents. METHODS: Phase 1 reviewed previous interventions and interviewed the clinical team, young people and families. Phase 2 ran three age-matched focus groups with 11 families of children aged 8-16 years. Feedback was used to modify the workshop. Phase 3 evaluated feasibility of delivery, as well as the effects on metabolic control, quality of life and fear of hypoglycaemia, measured at baseline and 1-3 months post intervention. RESULTS: Eighty-nine families were invited to take part. Twenty-two (25%) participated in seven pilot groups (median age of young people 10 years, 36% girls). The intervention comprised a developmentally appropriate workshop for young people and parents addressing: (1) blood glucose control, (2) the potential impact of long-term high HbA1c , (3) the effects of 'hypos' and 'hypers', (4) self-management techniques and (5) talking confidently to people about diabetes. Participants were enthusiastic and positive about the workshop and would recommend it to others. Young people liked sharing ideas and meeting others with diabetes, while parents enjoyed listening to their children talk about their diabetes knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: Families living with Type 1 diabetes participated in developing a self-management group intervention. Although we demonstrated acceptability and feasibility, the pilot study results do not support the development of a randomized control trial to evaluate the effectiveness in improving HbA1c

    Sensitivity of the g-mode frequencies to pulsation codes and their parameters

    From the recent work of the Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity (ESTA, Lebreton et al. 2006; Monteiro et al. 2008), whose Task 2 is devoted to compare pulsational frequencies computed using most of the pulsational codes available in the asteroseismic community, the dependence of the theoretical frequencies with non-physical choices is now quite well fixed. To ensure that the accuracy of the computed frequencies is of the same order of magnitude or better than the observational errors, some requirements in the equilibrium models and the numerical resolutions of the pulsational equations must be followed. In particular, we have verified the numerical accuracy obtained with the Saclay seismic model, which is used to study the solar g-mode region (60 to 140μ\muHz). We have compared the results coming from the Aarhus adiabatic pulsation code (ADIPLS), with the frequencies computed with the Granada Code (GraCo) taking into account several possible choices. We have concluded that the present equilibrium models and the use of the Richardson extrapolation ensure an accuracy of the order of 0.01μHz0.01 \mu Hz in the determination of the frequencies, which is quite enough for our purposes.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Solar Physic

    Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in domestic pet cats in Australia and New Zealand: Guidelines for diagnosis, prevention and management

    Despite the passage of over 30 years since its discovery, the importance of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) on the health and longevity of infected domestic cats is hotly debated amongst feline experts. Notwithstanding the absence of good quality information, Australian and New Zealand (NZ) veterinarians should aim to minimise the exposure of cats to FIV. The most reliable way to achieve this goal is to recommend that all pet cats are kept exclusively indoors, or with secure outdoor access (e.g., cat enclosures, secure gardens), with FIV testing of any in-contact cats. All animal holding facilities should aim to individually house adult cats to limit the spread of FIV infection in groups of animals that are stressed and do not have established social hierarchies. Point-of-care (PoC) FIV antibody tests are available in Australia and NZ that can distinguish FIV-infected and uninfected FIV-vaccinated cats (Witness™ and Anigen Rapid™). Although testing of whole blood, serum or plasma remains the gold standard for FIV diagnosis, PoC testing using saliva may offer a welfare-friendly alternative in the future. PCR testing to detect FIV infection is not recommended as a screening procedure since a negative PCR result does not rule out FIV infection and is only recommended in specific scenarios. Australia and NZ are two of three countries where a dual subtype FIV vaccine (Fel-O-Vax® FIV) is available and offers a further avenue for disease prevention. Since FIV vaccination only has a reported field effectiveness of 56% in Australia, and possibly lower in NZ, FIV-vaccinated cats should undergo annual FIV testing prior to annual FIV re-vaccination using a suitable PoC kit to check infection has not occurred in the preceding year. With FIV-infected cats, clinicians should strive to be even more thorough than usual at detecting early signs of disease. The most effective way to enhance the quality of life and life expectancy of FIV-infected cats is to optimise basic husbandry and to treat any concurrent conditions early in the disease course. Currently, no available drugs are registered for the treatment of FIV infection. Critically, the euthanasia of healthy FIV-infected cats, and sick FIV-infected cats without appropriate clinical investigations, should not occur
